The 6 Best IELTS Preparation Books

IELTS preparation
IELTS preparation is a complex process, and selecting the right resources is crucial. Here are six classic IELTS books to check out:

  1. "The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS": This comprehensive book is excellent for both academic and general training. It includes practice tests, skill-building tips, and detailed explanations of each section. I personally have successfully used it with almost all of my students.
  2. "Barron's IELTS Superpack": Barron's Superpack offers a complete preparation kit, including practice exams, audio tracks, and thorough reviews of all IELTS sections.
  3. "IELTS Practice Tests Plus series": This series provides detailed strategies and tips, practice questions, and full practice tests. It's helpful for understanding the exam format and developing test-taking strategies.
  4. "Cambridge IELTS Series": The Cambridge IELTS books, particularly the latest editions, offer real past exam papers, providing an authentic test practice experience.
  5. "Collins English for IELTS": This series has different books focusing on each skill (listening, reading, writing, and speaking), making it great for targeted practice.
  6. "IELTS Advantage" is another excellent series of books for IELTS preparation, and one of my favourites. It is known for its focused approach on specific skills and strategies needed to excel in the IELTS exam. The series typically includes separate books for different sections of the IELTS test - Writing Skills, Reading Skills, Speaking Skills, and Listening Skills. Here's a brief overview:

  • IELTS Advantage - Writing Skills: This book is designed to help students with the writing component, providing step-by-step guidance on how to write high-quality essays. It includes model answers, lessons on structuring and organizing your writing, and tips on common mistakes to avoid.
  • IELTS Advantage - Reading Skills: This book focuses on the reading section and is helpful for both Academic and General Training versions of the IELTS. It covers effective reading strategies, practice tests, and techniques for understanding complex texts.
  • IELTS Advantage - Speaking Skills: Aimed at improving speaking skills, this book provides detailed explanations on how to enhance fluency and coherence, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It also includes practice activities and sample answers.
  • IELTS Advantage - Listening Skills: This book helps candidates develop their listening skills, offering practical tips for understanding spoken English in various accents and contexts. It also provides practice exercises to help familiarize candidates with the format of the listening section.

Each of these books has its own unique strengths, so it's beneficial to use a combination of them for a well-rounded preparation. It is also a good idea to add other materials (not from an IELTS book) to enrich your study experience. Consistent practice and familiarizing yourself with the test format are key to success in IELTS.
Good luck!
